Thomas Sedwick [parents unknown] b. est 1640, presumed in England d. January 1697/98 Calvert County Maryland m. abt 1670 Elizabeth Unknown in Maryland immigrated to Maryland abt 1658 - 1665 Will: 11 January 1697/98, Will Calvert Co., Maryland, probated 28 January 1698 Property/real estate: 13 December 1670, Land Claim in Calvert Co., Maryland Thomas Sedwick was a Puritan in Maryland. He apparently arrived between 1658 and 1665. He was listed as "Under Service," meaning someone paid his fare, and under "Condition of Plantation" in Maryland. A servant was entitled to claim 50 acres of land upon completing his period of servitude. He claimed his 50 acres on December 13, 1670. Thomas Sedgwick (note spelling) has been confirmed in Calvert County, Maryland in 1665.
Thomas married Elizabeth Unknown. He died in January 1697/98, leaving Elizabeth the dwelling plantation called Joyner for the remainder of her lifetime. (ref: THE MARYLAND CALENDAR OF WILLS, Kohn & Pollock Pub. 1906, Vol. II, Wills from 1685 to 1702, page 163.) Some claim that Thomas was a descendant of Robert Sedgwick (1613-1656) through his son Samuel who married Elizabeth Harwood, but this is not possible. Samuel and Elizabeth were born in 1639 and 1650, and married in 1666/67. They could not have had a son old enough to "claim his acres" in 1670. more details |
