Matthew stated in 1880 that his Father was born in Virginia and his mother in North Carolina.
This is the only evidence we have so far of their origins.
Matthew and Martha apparently lived in Franklin County, Indiana from the time of their marriage in 1843 until 1852, when they moved to Shelby County.
Matthew is called "Rev. Matthew Sedgwick" on tombstone and in obituary; according to his obituary he was active in the M. E. Church.
This note appeared in The Fort Wayne News, Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana, 30 August, 1895:
Shelbyville, Aug 30 - Matthew Sedgwick, a pioneer of Shelby county and father of ex-County Clerk John R Sedgwick, was stricken with paralysis yesterday afternoon. The physicians say he cannot recover.

Martha Sedgwick died September 27, 1859

and is buried at Brandywine Twp, Shelby, Indiana, Brandywine Cemetery.
