Census records: John Arthur Sedgewick, son of Imimgrant Josef Cedzich, always claimed he was born in New York in 1898, but it he was surely born in Austria before his parents immigrated to the United States. Perhaps he wanted to be "more American." Apparently either John Arthur Sedgewick or Grayce Olson taught school in Hindman, Kentucky (northeast of Hazard). we know that John lived there for a while; he and Grayce were married in nearby Ashland in 1922. They travelled as a young family, having a son born in Nebraska, then one in Wisconsin. In the late 1920's they moved to Glen Rock New Jersey, then to Ridgewood New Jersey. Later they moved to New Hampshire, where they lived in Danbury, Sugar Hill and Dover. Son Richard D Sedgewick recalls: At the early stages of the depression John and Grayce started a Nursery business using our front yard in Glen Rock NJ and soon after a feed store also in Glen Rock with an expanded Nursery and I remember Stella living in nearby Radburn and references to "uncle Gene" as a "G Man" during early '30s----"G Man" probably meant Gov't employee but the mistique of Dillinger etc hinted of an exciting relative---- Edna Walck graduated from Boston University Medical School in 1929, was a doctor (anesthesiologist) at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire, raised chinchillas, was an authority (and lecturer) on covered bridges in New England. Elizabeth (Betty) Burgoine Sedgewick loves cooking and all kinds of crafts, in particular, rug hooking, and is looking forward to turning 100!!
