Mary Ellen (Seymour):

He married Mary Ellen Sullivan, Bef. 1859 probably in New Orleans, Louisiana? She was the daughter of Jeramiah (Michael) Sullivan and Ellen ???. She was born 20 Mar 1841 in County Kerrry, Ireland, and died 12 Feb 1918 in Galveston, Galveston Co., TX.

John was apparently in New Orleans from about 1860 to the mid 1870's. He appears frequently in the New Orleans City Directories.

It appears that these records document the death of John Sedgwick,
as no other John Sedgwick is known to be in the area at the time:

Pg. 311, John Sedgewick, aged 49, male, native of Ireland, was found lying dead on Chartrese St. near Elysian Fields.

Pg. 312, col. 24 ; January 1874 ; January 31, 1874 ; John Sedgewick Having been duly sworn and charged diligently to inquire on behalf of the state of Louisiana how, when, and after what manner the said John Sedgewick came to death and upon their oaths do say that this day the body of said John Sedgewick was found dead at the above described place and after viewing the body of the said John Sedgewick and after a careful examination of the body and evidence elicited, We the Jury give as verdict that he came to death suddenly at or about 10 o'clock AM from Apploplexy.

A copy of the newspaper obit for Mary Ellen Seymour,
found with the Record of Funeral, from Malloy and Sons Funeral Home:

"Died, Seymour-Mrs. Ellen Seymour relict of the late Matt Seymour died at son's (W.J. Sedgwick) residence 3912 Ave I, this afternoon at 8 o'clock, Rev. J.S. Murphey officating. Interment in Calvery Cem. The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers: J.B. Mallia, D.H. MacInerney, O.R. Hoecker, Sr., Geo. Harrison, H.D. Boyd, Max Artusy." Her cause of death, Astemia. Other conditions, Carcinoma Uteri.

"Be it remembered, that on this day to wit: the Seventeenth of May in the year of one lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty five and the eighty ninth of the Independence of the United States of America, before me, F.M. Crozat, duly commissioned and sworn Recorder of Births and Deaths, in and for the Parish and City of Orleans personally appeared John Sedgwick a native of Ireland at No. 84 N. Gariguy (SP) street in this city who by these presents declares that John Sedgwick a nitive of New Orleans born on the twenty ninth day of Sept (29th September 1864) and Died on the fifteenth instant (15th May 1865) lawful child of despondant with Ellen Sullivan" {{the document has what appears to be John Sedgwick's signature}}

"Written on the Twenty First of May 1866"
"On the twenty eighth day of April this present year (28th April 1866) at Eleven o'clock A.M. in a house situated at No. 53 Elysian Field third district in this City was born a male child named John Sedgwick issue of the Lawful marriage of Mr. John Sedgwick with Mrs Ellen Sulivan."

"Ellen Sedgwick, a native of Ireland, residing at No 44 Elesian {sp} Fields in this city, who hereby declares that on the 19 Mar 1871, at 4 o'ck P.M. at 44 Elesian Field was born a male named THOMAS FRANCIS SEDGWICK, lawful issue of William Sedgwick a native of Ireland with desponent {sp}."

Mary Ellen said in the 1910 census that she had borne eight children, of whom five were living. The five living were William Joseph Sedgwick, Mary Ellen Sedgwick, John Robert Sedgwick, Edward W Sedgwick and Matthew Seymour. Two of the deceaased are John Sedgwick (1864) and Thomas Francis Sedgwick. Is this the eighth child?

There is a record at Sts. Peter and Paul church, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, of a baptism in June 1873 of one Walter Joseph Sedgwick, age 6 months:

"Sts. Peter and Paul, I noted baptisms of Walter Joseph, aged 6 months in June 1873."
