Charles Zadock Sedwick never did figure out whether he was born in Virginia or Missouri. He gave both states with regularity. I tend to believe the earliest record, as given by his father in the 1850 census, when Charles was but four years old, and the memory was fresh; I suspect that while his two older brothers were born in Missouri, Charles was born in Virginia. He served in the Civil War in Company H Fourth Virginia Calvary,
which hailed from Fauquier County and called themselves the "Black Horse Cavalry."

1862 Jun 03: Discharged for minority, he was 15 when he entered, 16 by this date 1863 Apr 01: Enlisted Company H, 4th Cavalry Regiment Virginia, private 1863 Aug 18: Horse killed 1864 Apr 15: Absent, sick (estimated day) 1865 May 06: Paroled at Warrenton or Winchester, Virginia He apparently moved to Texas in 1874, moved to Alvin, Brazoria, Texas in 1897.7 |
