William had not been in the United States very long when the Civil War commenced. William Sedgwick of Coventry, Rhode Island, enlisted as a private on September 18, 1862, in Company D, Rhode Island 11th Infantry Regiment, and mustered out on 13 July 1863 in Providence, Rhode Island.
In the 1889, 1890 and 1891 Fall River, Massachusetts City Directories, William Sedgwick is listed at "house 9 Cash."
