REV. A. H. SEDGWICK

Obituary from the Auckland Star Tues. July 14 1931

A well known minister of the Anglican Church, the Rev. Arthur Henry Sedgwick, died on July 10 at Onehunga, aged 78 years. He was born in England, came to New Zealand when 18 years of age, and studied at the Theological College at Bishopdale, Nelson. He was ordained a deacon in 1878, and appointed a curate at Nelson the same year. The following year he was ordained to the priesthood and appointed vicar of St. Stephen’s, his parish embracing Reefton, Grey Valley and Upper Buller. In 1884 he became the vicar of the Epiphany Church at Takaka, and three years later went to Holy Trinity Church, Picton, where he remained for 23 years. In 1890, for health reasons, he went to England, and while there was appointed curate at Cambridge. He returned to his charge in 1905, but, his health again breaking down, he once more went to England. He returned to New Zealand, but for health reasons retired from active ministry in 1907.

Mr Sedgwick came to live in Onehunga in 1909, and frequently assisted at the service at St. Peter’s, St. James’, Mangere and St. John’s, Royal Oak. Mr Sedgwick never married. A service was held this morning at St. Peter’s Church, Onehunga, after which the internment took place at Waikumete Cemetery.

Feeling reference to Mr Sedgwick’s death was made yesterday at the Onehunga Presbyterian Church by the Rev. D.D. Scott.

Sedgwick.org note: The statement that Rev Sedgwick never married is erroneous.
He's buried with his wife at New Zealand, Auckland, Waikaraka Cemetery.
